The Hawkweed got its name from the ancient Roman naturalist Pliny who believed that hawks ate the flower to gain strength. Early New England farmers called it the Devil's Paintbrush possibly from the reddish orange colour. The 'weed' caused havoc in their fields. Whatever the name, it is a beautiful wildflower!
